The Apopka Chief Newsletter: August 29 Edition

Welcome to the Apopka Chief weekly newsletter!

We hope you’ve had a wonderful week so far! Here at the Chief, we’re definitely excited for the long weekend.

One of the reasons we report local Apopka news is so you can cast informed votes. This week, you have the opportunity to do just that! The special election for Florida Senate District 15 and Florida House District 40 will be this Tuesday, Sept. 2, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. LaVon Bracy Davis (D) will run against Willie Montague (R) for Senate District 15, and Tuan Lee (R) will run against RaShon Young (D) for House District 40. Early voting ends on August 31 at 6 p.m. Please visit the Orange County elections website for more information.

If you have anything you’d like to see (or not see) in our weekly newsletter, please reach out directly to Sarah Merly at [email protected]. And if you want to read an exclusive monthly Apopka Chief newsletter—among other perks like giveaways and community events—please consider joining our membership program.

Thank you for reading. We can’t wait to hear your thoughts!

Apopka Fact of the Week:

In the early 1800s, commercial orange wineries emerged. Wines from oranges and grapes were manufactured in the Apopka area. In 1887, Amos Schultz organized the Clay Springs Wine Company to make wine from oranges. In 1889, the Piedmont Winery, operated by August “Gust” Jackson and Jonas and Olaf Larsson, was the first to produce grape wine.
