Apopka Fact of the Week:

Apopka at one time had a municipal airport. In 1936, it was named Ryan Field in honor of the recently deceased mayor at that time and was designated as an emergency landing field. During World War II, Helen McBride, one of the early women to take up flying, operated the Central Florida Flying School, training students to become members of the Army Air Corps Reserve. Today, Dream Lake Elementary School occupies part of the land that was once Ryan Field.
